Help! How to distinguish between tulip bulbs and narcissus bulbs pls?

Hi all, I bought a pack of mixed bulbs from Sainsbury's. Planning to plant some out but found that the 7 tulip bulbs and 10 narcissus bulbs are mixed together in one pack! (Adding to the challenge: There are only 16 bulbs in total after some counting....) I read that you are only supposed to plant tulip bulbs in Nov. How can I tell which ones are narcissus bulbs please? Thanks a lot!

The rounder ones are the daffs.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Narcissi at the top of your photo, tulips at the bottom  :)
  • Agree with AnniD, but maybe check the one on the RHS of the second row - this could be a tulip as well. They tend to be `smoother` than narcissus. That would give 6 tulips and 10 narcissus.
  • Thanks all! I've planted the 9 narcissus bulbs and here are the 7 left which I think are tulip bulbs. The one in the middle with lots of roots I'm not very sure. When in doubt, treat as tulip?

The bulb in the middle looks more like a daffodil bulb.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

    I'd agree.
Daffs/narcissus are generally rougher and hairier than tulips  :)

  • Same here - the bulb 1/3 'd in from RH side bottom row is a narcissus.
  • Thanks again! Looks like there is a consensus. I'll plant the hairy one out tomorrow as well then.  :D
