Looks like Polygonatum [Solomon's Seal] Did it have little white tubular flowers in late spring/early summer? The tiny 'sprigs' you can see on the stems, between the leaves, are what the spent flowers look like.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks for your help, yes we have lots of birds, never seen them with a dibber but they are great sowers. I know it looks pretty much established but the wife (she's the gardener) has only just noticed it so can't say if it flowered.
