Frogs won't necessarily keep on top of slugs and snails either. They don't live in ponds for a large part of the time, so when they're out and about they'll eat some, and they travel around a fair bit, so they won't necessarily eat all of yours. Some people find slug pubs useful [I couldn't use them for reasons I won't go into] but it's like any 'pest' - some years they'll be worse than others
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
