Cayenne doesn’t turn red (and is not spicy)

Hi

i am thinking on picking some of my cayennes as they have a good size, but they are still green
Should I wait for them to turn red or should I pick them now? I picked one and it was like a pepper, no spicy at all

  • They’ll get hotter as they ripen.

  • if i pick them and let them ripen in a fruit bowl, would they get hotter?

They are better left on the plant to ripen.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Ideally they'd like some sun & warmth - always a bit hit-n-miss in September & October but hopefully they'll riped in a few weeks. Mine are still green too.
  • Once they start to turn, you can ripen them in a warm place ( A/Cupboard eg ) but best left on the plant when possible.  The weather in the next month or so will decide for you.
Cayenne are hot even when green but of course it depends on your taste buds.  There are hotter varieties which you could consider for next year.

I have found that If I do not have hot enough weather my chili peppers are not hot at all, I grew jalapeno peppers a couple of years ago, got a great harvest about 1kg per plant and about one pepper per plant had any heat at all, it was russian roulette eating them. The other peppers tasted  just like a sweet pepper, if you have has as miserable summer where you are as I have had that could well be the problem.

I succesfully overwintered a Jalapeno plant - and the head start this gave me produced a lot of red - and pretty hot peppers. the first bunch came through as little ball shaped peppers - for whatever reason - but the next lot were massive and are ripening nicely.

the 2 Jalepeno I grew from seed this year are patehtic. small plants, with barely any fruit on them

I've had success with Ring of Fire this year. lots and lots of fruit and ripening nicely - despite the pretty awful summer we've had.

I've also grown Aji Limon for the first time this year. again - loads of fruit and no issue with ripening

I'll definitely be growing the RoF and AL again next year - and I'm going to try and overwinter the same Jalepeno again

My chilies have been awful this year, my tomatoes have been average, my cucumbers rubbish (not a single one). Im blaming not enough sun and heat - and maybe using old seeds.
Either way I will come back stronger next year!!!
