Pruning a Weigela

I planted a Weigela in June it has not flowered yet and there's no sign of any buds . As this should be pruned in Spring should I leave it until then or wait until after it has bloomed next year?

    If it's just newly planted [June counts as newly planted]  it's getting established, and wouldn't be likely to flower this year.  :)

    I should have said - normally you'd prune after flowering. If you prune in spring, you'll prune off the flowering stems. 

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    The recommendation for Weigela is to prune after flowering, removing some of the older stems to encourage new growth. Yours is just a baby and doesn't need to be pruned yet. I hardly ever prune mine and haven't noticed that it flowers any more on new growth than it does on old. I was going to prune it last year, but gave up as it was still flowering into November :)
    They make quite large shrubs in time but you can cut them right back and they will start afresh. The bees love the flowers.

    Prune after flowering next spring if you need to, but are you sure that's a Weigela? It looks a lot like peony foliage to me.

    I’ve got several weigela and the leaves are very different from those. It does look very similar to my peony though. It hasn’t flowered yet either.

    I posted last night on the other thread about peonies - same photos!
    I thought it looked like a peony too, but I just posted as though it was a Weigela as I only grow a white one, and I wasn't sure if it was just another variety I was unfamiliar with   :)

    That’s peony foliage 100% definitely. 😊
