Pond plants on offer.

A friend is thinning out their pond plants. We have been offered yellow iris, water plantain & Sagittaria. We have a 4x10 foot pond with a max of 12 inches of water. Are all suitable? I presume all will need planting in containers with soil? Pic of our pond currently only duck weed.

    Yellow flag iris and water plantain are both native to the UK, sagittaria is not. The iris and water plantain like shallow mud so bear that in mind if you decide to accept them and where to plant them. Both will do well in pots if not too deep. Beware that the iris can take over so will need thinning in the future. Now is a good time to move and plant them. I'm a wildlife gardener so go for natives with only few exceptions.  Your picture looks like a natural setting. Try to get some oxygenators in soon.

    What oxygenates would you recommend?

    The best oxygenators are Hornwort and one of the native Milfoils. Avoid non natives as some are very invasive. If you look on the RSPB and some of the Wildlife Trusts websites you will find lists of recommended plants for ponds. We made a wildlife pond five years ago and it's really thriving. Lots of good advice generally there too.
