The shape is coming back well. Obviously the flowering this year was a bit wobsided but it will improve.  Don't let it dry out in summer , and give it the occasional feed to build it up for next years flowers.
  • Thanks fidgetbones. Yes it is doing well. Thanks for the tips, I will make sure to follow them!  :)

I was late to this thread.  But much appreciated the "executive summary".

I think there may have been a graft, but buried.  Keep a look-out for suckers from below ground.

PS.  I think your magnolia also looks better with a nice green lawn setting it off.  Round me they usually get a frosting just at flowering time.    Hopefully you will miss one this year.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Thanks for your comment. I couldn’t see a graft when I dug around it before but certainly could be one. Haven’t noticed any suckers yet but will keep an eye out!

As for the weather, we tend to avoid frosts at this time, the wind on the other hand.. As soon as it comes into flower we always seem to get winds from hell itself doing its best to knock everything off! :(
  • A slightly concerning update to my magnolia. Upon closer inspection today I noticed this segment (the pictures aren’t the best sorry) where an area of bark seems to be missing and it looks reasonably deep. I couldn’t really get into it because of the angle so it was hard to see exactly what was going on. There is no sign of issues from the flowers/foliage. I can’t cut it out because I would basically be cutting out the whole tree. Should I be concerned about this, or is it relatively normal? I might take some cuttings this summer just in case.

    Thanks in advance!
