Addressing Depleted Soil

I've had a couple of unsightly conifers removed and the rather substantial roots obliterated (as far as possible) with a stump grinder. The soil in the area already looked fairly poor which I assume is from nutrient depletion by the conifers(?). So, in addition to the poor soil it is now combined with the shredded 'mulch' from the stump grinding. I'd like to replant in this area. I'm planning on removing the lose and dry 'spoil'. What would be the best way to re-energise the soil? Topsoil / Compost / Well-rotted manure ??

Thanks

  • I would add well-rotted farmyard manure and homemade garden compost if you have any.

Plus, over the past couple of years I’ve been mulching beds and borders in my gritty freedraining garden with bags of Soil Conditioner from the garden centre and its certainly improved  the structure and moisture retention.
We’ve used some this week on one of my mother in laws rather ‘tired’ beds of black fenland soil and it’s already holding moisture better and worms are appearing again from somewhere.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
