Gladioli transfer

I had very nice Gladioli in a pot this year - normally i treat them as annuals. But as I liked them so much, can i transfer them into my flower bed and they will come back next year?
Do i need to wait until all leaves are yellow before i transfer them?
thanks

  • Why do you treat them as annuals? Ideally you would wait till the folliage
  • Sorry, finger slip! Ideally when leaves have browned depending where you live,a lot of people have to take them up,dry off and overwinter like dahlias. I am in a mild area, and leave them in. I do have some in a half barrel, with other bulbs. They are so expensive,do you throw them away?

Some are pretty much annual - like the Acidantheras. They're not great for overwintering here, even under cover. The other types generally need protection too, but you can lift and store them when they've died back, and plant out next year when temps and ground conditions are suitable.
Do you know which types you have @katrinkemp? There's a few which are perennial as well.  :)

My acidantheras have been in pots in my front garden for about 6 years. Fairy I was assuming the whoppers that I grow. Perhaps we could have a picture,to be sure

Yeh - they just don't survive here @Nanny Beach ;)

The big ones would struggle too- conditions just don't suit. I'm thinking of getting some of the early ones which are perennial. G. byzantinus. There's a garden quite near me which has some. Good strong colour which would suit a bed I have.

  • Yes, I know Fairy, that's why I thought I had better point out,I'm in the mildest part of the UK and you may have to use winter protection. I put some new ones in this year cheap from Wilko, white and almost black, bought as a set. They absolutely shot up.

  • @Nanny Beach I am in Kent, but didn’t overwinter well last year - we had snow a few times. I just wanted to use the pot for something else and have space in the back of my flower bed. So in general they transfer easily? Just wait for leaves to get yellow?
    thanks
