Good morning
Fungus is growing at the base of my Ash tree, would be very grateful if someone could identify it for me as concerned our beautiful tree is in poor health.

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but we have had an awful lot of fungus growing on our trees and even on indoor plants. Myself and OH think it’s due to the wet summer and the unusual low light levels this year .Keep a eye on the tree ,look for other symptoms………it could just be what I’ve said .

It might be one of the polypores which will be living on dead wood in your tree. Time to get in a professional for an assessment,  ideally an arboriculturist who will have the necessary experience. There isn't anything you can do to treat the infection so it is best to get an expert opinion on the remaining life of the tree, especially if it would cause serious damage or danger to life if it were to fall.
  • Thank you all for the feedback, I have a feeling roots might be rotting. The tree is now as full as it was few years back. Plus council eventually granted permission for neighbours to build garage on part of the root protection area (just before we moved in 16 years ago, apparently root protection was put in place. I believe this has caused my tree to decline but not sure how I prove it!)
    Thanks again.
