Please identify this hedgerow fruit

I think I know what this is but don't want to name it and influence your thinking! Please settle this :)

    Damsons? We've got a few of those in our local community orchard.

    Sloes .., or possibly a sloe x damson that we called Blackjacks … pick and use as sloes.

    Or bullaces. Are they the same as Blackjacks or another variant? Doesn't make much difference, really - they are all subspecies of plums, all edible, variously sour though.

    The Bullaces I know from Suffolk are the Shepherd’s  Bullace which has more of the colour of a Victoria plum.

    They're about 2cm diameter, oval in shape, stems about 1.5 long...

    Look like bullace. We have sloes as well and they are very much smaller.

    Taste one - if it's a sloe it'll make your face screw-up :)
    Sloes also have some nasty thorns
