please can anyone help me identify the plant in the picture I have attached . I live in Shropshire if that helps. In summer it has large purple flowers. I have been told the seeds in the pods can irritate the skin. Thanks
Hello polly_ap. It is a type of rose know as Rosa rugosa and those are its rose hips. These roses originate in the far east and make good hedges. I have a white variety but it is a pain in the neck because it suckers everywhere. The hover flies love the flowers though so I put up with it.

Are you mistaking the purple flowers for a dark pink? To the best of my knowledge none of these have purple flowers. Perhaps the flowers have been from something else nearby, and it looks like they come from that plant.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I remember when we were younger at school that we used to take the hips off our wild roses (Rosa canina), split them open and them rub the hairs inside down the necks of our friends. This used to cause tremendous itching. No one escaped. Heavens but we were horrid! I expect a similar type of irritation maybe suffered if the rugosa hips were used in the same fashion. When my Grandmother made rose hip syrup she always used double muslin to make sure all the hairs were extracted during filtering before the syrup was bottled.

Almost all of the rugosa roses here are purple, sometimes you see a white, I've never seen a pink, however that is most certainly what it is. a nice enough plant if you can keep it in one spot and never want to go near it again!
