  Could be a cotoneaster seedling.

  Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

  I thought of that when I first saw it. It’s growing near to a little gap at the bottom of the hedge. 

  
  

  Would it be ok to be left (the bit I haven’t pulled off!). 

  
  

  I imagine it would be a bugger to dig out

  That looks more like Lonicera Nitida, Box Honeysuckle. It would not be a good idea to leave it there. Best to pot up or replant somewhere more suitable.

  I’d go with Lizzie,  a cotoneaster.

  Cotoneaster have alternate leaves.
  Lonicera leaves are opposite.
  
  However I am 99% sure with the green twig and opposite leaves it is one on the Euonymus clan.
