When to cut back lavender

I have a 3 year old lavender hedge and last year I cut it back hard in early Sept to about 9cm and it has come back beautifully this year. I intend to do the same this year but have read conflicting reports online. Is it better to wait to the spring?

  • The general idea is that leaving the dead flower stems until Spring can help protect the plants from frost over winter.
If you had a relatively mild winter last year, cutting back in September obviously did no harm at all.  Altho your pic doesn't offer a close up view, the hedge looks in pretty good nick :)
Depends on your location and what this winter will be like as to whether you continue with your normal routine or not. No telling really.
However,  if you by any chance have a direct line to the Weather God, perhaps you could let the rest of us know - it would certainly be "Best Post of the Year" I think :D
