    Yes - our soil in Scotland is largely neutral to acidic, which is why they grow so well here, especially in the west, because of our rainfall, but it's also why drainage is important. 
    If the soil's alkaline @daisy348- keep them potted. Much easier, and you can tailor the growing medium. You can't change the pH of soil in a border.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
