we planted a lot of bare root hedging whips on are small holding over the winter it is hazel, field maple, hawthorn, blackthorn and holly. will I need to cut these back or prune atall this winter or do I let them get more established there is nearly 3000 in total. many thanks
I think there are different approaches to planting hedge plants with some people preferring to prune them immediately after planting and others that leave it a bit longer. I posted a few videos showing how a hedge of hornbeam and white thorn developed with the no early pruning option as I wanted the plants to get tall enough to out grow the weeds a bit faster. The length of the hedge row took a good amount of time to keep free of competition. Started to trim the sides off after a couple of years growth to keep the hedge inside the fence that was protecting it from grazing. I think either method is likely to work as the plants used for hedging are usually ones that are vigorous enough to succeed to grow either way.
Yes i wasnt advised to prune immediately by the growers but in hindsight i think that would have been best.I have some more to plant this season so ill try it. They are doing well though field maple has shot right up but i think ill leave untill summer to trim as suggessted so they get well above the weed and grass line. ill be sure to check out the videos
If you have a mix of all kinds of plants in a hedge, you'll have a mix of growth in terms of speed. It's how it is. You have to prune/trim accordingly, and accept that it isn't like a hedge of one type of plant.
Apologies if you thought people were a little 'off' in their responses to you @broadoaklandscapesbristo. The reason for that is the name you've chosen, and it's similarity to a gardening company. We get a huge amount of spam [a lot recently] and all advertising has to be paid for. It's also a trick many companies use in order to try and advertise without paying - they sneak adverts in through their names or in the signature. It might be better to change it - if you're a genuine poster
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks yes each species is behaving quite differently so i think your right.
Yes i was a bit shcked by some of the responses. I am a self employed landscape gardener and that is my business name but i definitely dont have the money to pay for advertising or the first clue about computers so i think your safe from my vast advertising department. i mainly do garden construction decking, patios etc but i recently bought a smallholding with some friends to grow our own veg, keep some livestock etc so im learming alot about growing but do also need alot of advice. thanks for the time you took to reply i really appreciate it A
