Clematis (or climber) recommendation 😊

Hi, I would like to get a clematis or other climber and would like a recommendation 😊

* For an obelisk
* By front door
* Strong fragrance
* Colourful
* Will be planted in ground
* It will be on north side of house but location should get light from every direction being an obelisk - perhaps not South.

Many thanks!

Liz

    Lots of the smaller clematis will be fine - alpinas, macropetalas for example. C. koreanas [if you have suitable conditions] but none of them are scented.

    I can't think of many climbers for that position that are, apart from annuals, but someone might be able to advise.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • What about the chocolate vine (Akebia quinata)?
    We have it on the North face of our polytunnel and has been there for many years.
    We have cut it back now and then when we feel that it is getting too big.
    The flowers are small but fragrant.

    I would think a smaller, modern climbing rose might be better for the brief.
  • Thank you @Fairygirl @bertrand-mabel @fire 😊
    fairy girl - I actually have an alpina on the trellis on that wall 😊 Bertrand-Mabel I’ll have a look more at the chocolate vine! Not heard of that before, good idea for somewhere 😊 think I may go for the climbing rose fire - just had a look and I think a Gertrude Jekyll looks like it could fit the bill for what I would like 😊 thank you!
