KELSAE ONIONS

I will be harvesting my kelsae onions soon. It's the first time I've grown them and I'm very pleased with my crop, averaging 4 to 6 inches in diameter.
I bought them as plants from D. T. Brown Seeds.
How long can I store them for ?
I'm told that they don't store for very long.
Anyone had any experience of this.?
Are there any similar large onion varieties I can grow which will store well.?
Many thanks

I haven’t grown that variety, I always grow Ailsa Craig from seed, I planted mine once they were dry and hung them in the front porch. My plaiting is pants so ignore that😀 but the onions you see here lasted hung there until they’d gone.
I don’t know how they should be stored, I expect there are experienced growers on here that will advise you better.  But that worked for me.

  • Thanks for the advice Lyn.
I've grown Ailsa Craig in the past - they're a good variety.
I fancied growing some large onions this year & opted for Kelsae. They're lovely looking onion, mild but tasty apparently. They don't keep as well I've been told 3 months max.
  • I only know Kelsae as a show bench variety and very tasty baked whole in foil with lots of butter and black pepper... lots of crusty bread needed  ... a regular winner at our village Hort. Show would give his exhibits away to a chosen few with that recipe recommendation ... marvellous.

However, my brother is a farmer growing hundreds of acres of onions for the big packers etc ... he always recommends checking the necks of an onion to make sure that it's totally dry, then choose the ones with the most sloping 'shoulders' to store  ... he told me that onions with 'horizontal shoulders' are most likely to rot earlier than those with sloping shoulders.  When shopping for onions I always choose those with 'sloping shoulders'.

    Hope that's of a little help.   :)

  • Thank you for advice - much appreciated 👍
Anyone else grown Kelsae.? or any large or exhibition onions.?
