Are my leeks ready?

Leeks have been growing for quite a few weeks now but still seem quite thin. I realise they're probably a bit too packed in but any thoughts?

  • Depends how long they have been growing.
Can you pull...with care..the larger ones? This will give more room for the others.
Leeks do need water to develop.

Leeks, like spring onions, can be harvested at any time during its growth cycle - best when young and tender before it sets seed in the second year.

Definitely thin them out to increase air flow so that you reduce the chances of fungal diseases like rust from developing.

This is likely to happen around May-June next year when there will be a humidity change so start using them up as soon as you spot signs of a significant infection. Even then, the infected leeks are perfectly edible if you peel away the outer affected layers.

It depends what they've got underneath them?  If you feel like trying to give them a spurt, get a plastic container (ideally 5 litre), put in a small handful of chicken manure pellets, fill with water, shake vigorously and water the leeks with it.  That'll tell you whether it's a question of undernourishment restricting growth.
