Plant ID - and how best to get more of this growing

This plant appears to be a prolific self seeder and has appeared in the “wild” area of my garden. I really like it’s late summer colour so what is it and how best to get more of this growing in my beds?

  • Crocosmia/Montbretia (probably the latter, if it is quite invasive).  You can divide the corms to get more, or collect the seed and sow them.  You can buy very colourful hybrids too.  One of the most popular ones is C. Lucifer.  Trecanna Nurseries in Cornwall have a great selection.

They benefit from splitting to keep corms fresh and thriving, but that stuff will spread everywhere.
The named varieties are better behaved. Loads of choices.

It will take care of that by itself! I would get rid of as much of it as possible unless you don't mind it completely taking over. If you really like it you can get a better behaved 'named variety' as mentioned above but there are many nicer plants out there for late colour IMO!

I can't really tell the difference between the plant pictured above and the named variety "Emily McKenzie" which I think I have. They look the same to me but maybe there is a very subtle difference in colouration on the flowers or the foliage might be lighter in colour.

Wait a year and you'll be able to tell  ;)
    E. McKenzie is much more subtle - and has dark centres. Flowers are bigger too.

I don't have any photos of mine and they aren't open yet, but here's a link so you might be able to see
