Plant recognition - any ideas please? It's currently about 4' x 3'. It has not flowered this year

    It looks like  deciduous magnolia that has been heavily pruned, cutting off all the flower buds. Stop any itinerant"gardeners" pruning it to a lollipop shape and it should recover and flower .

    Looks quite a bit like a magnolia.

    We moved here in December and was hard pruned by previous owners.  I have left it to see how it develops.  So far no flowers and leaves are size of my hand.

    It'll take a while to get going again.
    Whenever you prune a shrub back hard, it can take several seasons for them to properly recover and start flowering, but the advantage is that they are often rejuvenated and grow much better as a result.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Yeah as fidgetbones said this year's flowers will have been lopped off as buds last year.

    Leave it be and it'll put on a lot of greenery (as evidenced in your pics) and buds for flowers in spring next year.

    Thin it out as needed after flowering and away you go.

    Could it be a Griselinia? Previous owners cropping for a hedging plant.
