as i thought you are planting to far apart. proper spacing is 6 in for early varieties 8 in mid season varieties and 12 in for late season varieties. all are block planted spacing.. I might start thread to teach the secrets of sweet corn to you ukers.
wargarden I just went down to check my measurements and they were actually planted 12 inches apart (in a block). I looked at American and UK sites before planting as well as the instructions for this variety. They did really well given the appalling summer we have had for crops that like sunshine. 2-3 fat cobs per plant. Unfortunately squirrels ate them all (bar the two I consumed) in the course of the last week while I was on holiday.
I know, I do... I might not grow them next year. I don't have that much room. However if I had not gone away this week, I would have picked more, and been better able to keep an eye on them. Will see (re next year)...
p.s. please do start your thread. I am sure there are lots of people on here who are expert at growing them, but there will be others whoe are more new to it. I have grown them a couple of times before, but this is the first year I have done so diligently and, squirrels notwithstanding, it did pay off.
