Mould on compost in planter

I came back from holiday to find a lot of what looks like mould across the surface of the compost in a planter I was going to replant with autumn bedding next week. I was going to replace the compost anyway, but what else do I need to do? Have not encountered this before

It's rarely a problem. It's how compost gets broken down in order to be used.
A photo would help though. It might well be a slime mould if it isn't just a fungi of some sort.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you for your reply. I don't know the difference between mould, fungus and slime, but this is suddenly covering most of the surface of a 6ft planter! Unfortunately my telephone's camera cannot focus, but it might give you an idea.

Have you put slug pellets on the compost before?
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Yes, put some here just before the holiday. Do they cause this? I don't usually use them as we get hedgehogs
