Agaves

HELP! my beautiful Agaves (not sure if it's American or Tequilana) has flowered after 15 years of us inheritting it with our house. Apparently this is extremely rare, and can take up to 30+ years to flower, but sadly i know this means its going to die. It's taller than my house - and I would be grateful if anyone knows how/when to cut the flower/stem down, and how quickly the plant will die afterwards - and then whats the best way to cut the root out?

  • Sorry can't help but what a wonderful plant you have and so lucky to have it flower.
  • Probably Americana or even Neo-Mexicana? Even so, 15 years until flowering is about right.
It'll flower now, produce offsets and seeds then the stalk will die. The plant will eventually shrivel up and the offsets which will have fallen to the ground will root.
The plant will have quite a root system but should come out without too much effort.
    Stunning plant BTW.
  • Thanks for replying Chris! I will need to cut the flower down before the autumn, as its so heavy, tall, and close to the house if the wind took it - it would go through my roof! Such a shame the plant will die - but I can already see the baby off-shoots. I think i will call some help from the neighbors when its time to dig it out
  • Post it on twitter. I'm sure the RHS would be interested in seeing it.. as well one or two others.
  • I sent an email and photo's to RHS at Hyde Hall, which is my closest RHS garden a few weeks ago, and they havent even responded
