climbing rose planting in concrete base planter?

I've had a large breeze block planter made with concrete base foundation. Its 60cm high. Its been half filled with stones and gravel for drainage then membrane then soil (soil depth about 38cm deep). I want to plant a climbing rose but not sure about how the roots will like it as I've read they like deep soil for the tap root. Thanks for any advice, thoughts.

Do you mean there aren't any drainage holes anywhere?
If so, you'll need to make some. No plant will enjoy that I'm afraid  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Yes, we've had drainage holes put in the sides through the breeze blocks.

In that case, I'd take out a lot of the stones and replace with good soil and rotted manure if you want a rose. I doubt if a foot of soil would really be enough long term   :)

How wide is the planter? Essentially there's a 20cm drainage layer and 40cm of soil, which sounds sensible to me. I would improve the 40cm of soil on top with manure etc.

  • The planter is 45cm wide or just over 17".
