Hazelnuts empty

Hi we have inherited a few hazelnut trees, nuts look healthy but when we crack them open they are empty, does anyone know why please?

  • It's quite common - they probably didn't get properly pollinated.  The squirrels seem to know and only take those with nuts inside, the little #~&&%$s!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Ahh thankyou that makes sense, yes I’ve noticed the squirrels they do seem to find them. Thanks again😊
  • Last year we had a great harvest but the "squirrel" this year has taken the lot.
They often take them before they are ready for us and all we find is the shells underneath.
They take from the corkscrew hazel as well.
  • That’s exactly what’s happening here, we’re finding lots of empty shells too 😊
  • Don't forget, it's not just squirrels who eat nuts ... they may be the most obvious and the most common, but they're vital food for other small mammals ... if you want to find out who else may have been nibbling your nuts, look here

That’s interesting thankyou, the trees are in a paddock next to farm and woodland so I’m sure they have a feed on them 😊
