  • Did some rose admin today, plus some general tidying. Does anyone else find their garden gets messier the more 'improvements' are carried out?

Moved Yvonne Rabier, which did quite well initially in a shady spot but this year grew lanky and toppled over into the pond. Moved President Armand Zinch into a space in a sunny bed and Agnes into PAZ's space.  I didn't replace the soil but I had to dig down twice as deep to cram the roots in so hopefully that will suffice. Will put it on the special care list for 2022.

Moving a mature rose from ground is a lot of work.. I found moving them from pots was challenging enough.. Did you prune them heavily (roots & shoots)?

I opened one the Lyda rose hips.. Do you guys think its mature enough as seeds to be sown?

    God yes.
  • They weren't very mature @cooldoc, 2/3 years. I didn't prune the canes back although I probably should have done as they flailing around getting snagged on everything. I had to 'prune' a few roots just because they had run off underneath things and I couldn't dig them up. I'm relying on the dormancy and my heavy clay soil to get them through but we shall see😬

Not certain, others may know better, but when I’ve harvested mature rose seed, they’ve been beige/light golden brown in colour and opaque. Those look very pale and semi translucent so they may not be ready. Could be just the photograph though!

@Mr. Vine Eye even I suspected that they would not be mature enough. The hips were green even after 3 months, probably cause of cold weather.. Got one more hip on the plant, will wait a bit more.. (assuming it survives the rain/ snow)
