  I do sympathise @NewGardenerCornwall : Try sinking upended plastic 2 pint or even 4 pint bottles next to vines as you plant into final position. Reduces the risk of splashing foliage whilst watering. Better luck with your garden in 2022!

  Actually blight is airborne,  so watering is not necessarily the cause, just a way of weakening the plant making it susceptible.
