Should I prune my lavender?

Our lavender (planted this year) still has flowers and looks amazing. Can we avoid cutting it back just yet or is it essential that we do?

Thoughts welcomed.

Many thanks

    Yes.

A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • You can leave the cutting-back until early spring.  Indeed, the dead flowers will provide a degree of frost protection for the lower leaves over winter, too.  As always with lavender, when you do cut it back, don't cut into bare wood - always cut just above the lowest healthy green growth.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks. Really helpful!

I cut mine when the flowers have gone to seed( just the stems).  I use the seeds to make lavender bags (or rockets) to repel mites from the wardrobe and the food cupboard.  (Codlin moth).  You can cut the rest off in the spring as @BobTheGardener says.  Lavender is pretty hardy, but it does have a "shelf life" and dies off after a few years.

Do you have new baby shoots popping up? You could prune it a little bit to get the shape more symmetrical if you wanted to. It looks a little thin so if it was my plant I'd leave it as is but maybe cut the longer leads a bit so they are all about the same length.
and there it is - the link planted into someone else's post
