Chopping down is fun, clearing up ism so and stump removal is beep beeping hard work!  Fun bit is done.  Can I get off now? What can you do with a 5 to 6 m multi stemmed conifer once cut down? Last few trees we've cut down and trimmed to 20+ visits with up to 3 x 272 litre rubble sacks.

I wondered whether a chipper for mulch or to add to compost bins.  We got about 5 with the house when we moved in dotted around the garden.  Mostly empty. If we add chipped wood to green waste n would it all compost down OK?  Compost is a black art IMHO.  I've never known anyone who has had a good compost going on.
Wood chippings mixed with soft green stuff like grass clippings should make good compost, and "raw" chippings can be used as mulch around shrubs/trees (looks a bit stark to begin with, but it soon weathers and darkens).

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

NorthernJoe, you must be attacking a different species to the ones I removed.  Although roughly the height you describe the trunk was no more than about 10cm diameter.
  • I cut the larger conifer wood and season it for firewood, the smaller stuff goes through the chipper to make mulch or to add to the compost...
  • If you want to remove stumps, a cheap reciprocating saw is very useful to get through the stubborn roots.

We’ve had a few out,  ropes,  iron bar, wooden blocks and of course the trusty Mattock, great fun.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • A couple of grenades help too. I mean the metal wedge type but the ordnance version might work too.
