Willow cuttings/propagation.

AuntyRachAuntyRach Posts: 5,291
I have been offered some willow cuttings and been instructed to put straight in the ground as they should take. Any tips, experience or alternative ideas before I try that method? Thanks folks.

  • If you do that they’ll grow whether you want them to or not.
Watering them occasionally will make them grow a bit faster, thats all.

Yes, most are REALLY easy. They just can't wait to grow. Many you can just stick in a jar of water and watch the roots grow. But putting them in soil is guaranteed.
  • Where do you want them to grow?
They will take as others have said but they can soon get big.
You need to be sure that you want them.
We have many willows and have to pollard them back every 2 years and the new growth continues.

Some willows can be grown as shrubs and kept quite small, some prefer to be enormous so it's worth checking the type.

There are also types like goat willows that don't offer very much to a garden.

Thank you all. I will give the straight-in-the-ground a try. It’s a twisted variety and the Mother plant is lovely. I will try one lot in a spot by my shed where something tall to block the fence would be good, and have a think if there is anywhere else suitable.
