Soil improver for area around acer

Last month members offered suggestions as to what I could plant in the area surrounding my acer in the front garden, for which I'm very grateful. I've had a poke around at the soil and it's quite poor. There's lots of gravel from my old gravel drive and big lumps of clay, and a lot of roots from my acer. So I don't think…

We're all different aren't we? It's too cold a colour for my climate/skies, and I think that's why I eventually came to dislike it. I only grow purple-y blues, which I love.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
