Does anyone recognise this fruit?

Hi, I've come across a tree heavily laden with this fruit but I've no idea what it is. It feels nice and ripe, looks like a member of the plum family but is small, just about 2cms in diameter. Any suggestions as to what it might be please?

    Could be a greengage.

Agree, looks like a greengage to me. I just ate one from a small bush in my garden, unfortunately there is only one other fruit on it so no jam this year. I didn't plant a greengage but it is sited where I had three Victoria plum minarette trees which died off so it may be from the rootstock.

Can you cut one in half and post a picture of the middle?

It’s a prunus of some sort … possibly a greengage.
