Sunflowers

Hi.  We planted some perennial, multiple bloom sunflowers in our back garden here in Florida.  We had perfect sunflower weather this summer and a couple of our plants are well over ten feet high.  We've tried staking them but can't find wooden stakes taller than 6 feet.  If we cut the stems back to five feet or so, which would allow us to keep them upright via stakes, will the plant continue to produce blooms beyond the cut?  Thanks.

Doubt it. Try putting the stakes at 45 degrees angle instead of upright. The tops will flex.  That is how trees are recommended to be staked now.
  • Thank you.  We'll try that.

If you have a fence, you can try in future years to grow them a long side. It makes for easier support, I find.
