The idea of the salt water is to make the maggots crawl out of the fruit! It does work, but actually there can be surprisingly few. My mum always did this, also taught me to peel mushrooms before use as well. It wasn’t until I was at college that a friend convinced me that shop bought mushrooms didn’t need peeling. Thinking back, I suspect that as a youngster, my mother would probably only have eaten wild gathered mushrooms, and peeling them was maybe the best way to confirm that they were edible varieties.
  • Peeling mushrooms to see if they’re an edible variety is a myth  … I remember hearing it as a child …. but many non edible ones peel too 🤢

It's a bit like the old motto Shirley Conran had - 'Life's too short to stuff a mushroom'

Life's too short to peel them an' all.... :D
and to wash blackberries to check for maggots.....

If you wash soft fruit you need to use it immediately. those ones in the supermarket? they are not washed.
To stop mould you need to keep things dry and cold, so unwashed and into the fridge, not wet sitting on a warm kitchen counter.

I've just had a handful [brambles] with some cereal for my lunch. Yum.  :)

Check them for beasties as you pick them.  Freezing will kill any you miss.
  • When he picks soft fruit in the garden,my old man lays them out in a dish,in case anything craws out. Then fridge or open freeze
