Fatsia Japonica

Just received this houseplant as a gift. Instructions said it likes shade so I have it in a window with light but no sun. Edges of leaves are turning brown.  Any ideas why?

Because it's not a houseplant. It is a hardy shrub and would rather be outdoors. That said it is possible to keep them indoors but only in a cool, shady place where the atmosphere is not too dry.  That is probably why your leaf edges are browning, though it might have got rather too warm as well this summer. It will hate it when your heating comes on!
Mine lived for years in an unheated, north facing  porch, that got arctic blasts whenever the door was opened in winter, but has now progressed to a large pot just outside and is loving it.  When it has toughened up enough, it will go in the ground. It can cope with the cold, though the foliage might sustain some damage, but it will recover with the better weather. Cool, damp and shady position outdoors too :)

    If it's Fatsia japonica it isn't a houseplant  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I've got a couple in the garden, BUT smaller ones are sold in nurseries, garden centres as house plants, under Japanese aralia. They need to be kept in a shadey area
  • I live in Florida so no cold weather and lots of sunshine. Hard to find a shady spot even indoors. Perhaps a/c is too much for it.  It was sent to me as a houseplant.

This forum is largely UK based @cmtaurasi , so it might be worth seeking out a local forum or similar to ask for advice.
I wouldn't think air conditioning will help at all. If it's a F. japonica, it's all the things it hates, as they like a cool, shady damp place to grow best.

Have you got a photo though - that would help us to ID it for you at least   :)
