Strange varnish like substance bleeding from Stella cherry tree

ColinAColinA Posts: 392
I have a Stella cherry tree which was planted approximately ten years ago after purchasing from a reputable supplier, the main trunk is now three inches diameter, the lowest branch is one and a half inches diameter and where it joins the main trunk it is swelling up around the join and bleeding out a clear but set hard varnish like substance. Does anyone know what the cause might be.

  • You say varnish, I say sap.

Can you add a few photos to show the extent of the injury to that area. Trees weep when there has been some damage to the trunk and sometimes it can be serious enough to seriously affect their overall health.

Yes it is dried sap, last year we had a really good crop of cherries but poor this year, is it liable to be canker as I have already lost an apple and plum over the last few years to this
