Moving a daphne

I planted a Daphne Odora during early spring this year but, due to a lack of forward-thinking on my part, I planted two plants in front of it that have grown bigger than expected.

Therefore, I would like to move my Daphne. I know that Daphne’s are extremely troublesome to move, so I would be grateful for any tips. When (autumn or spring) and how should I move it? Could I move it into a big pot?

I wouldn't move one unless you absolutely have to,they really don't like it. Our last garden west facing, they were very happy, never managed to grow them anywhere else. They don't like pots, unless it's huge, you may get away with it. What a about moving the other plants
  • One of the plants is a dianthus planted last year which has grown big and woody at the base, so I’m not sure how well it would cope with moving? The other is a shrub that’s grown quite big. Both could be moved with some giggling about, but I’m not sure how the plants would cope

Of the 3 plants, the Daphne is the least likely to survive, so I'd take @Nanny Beach
    advice and move the others.
I split a big dianthus plant a few weeks back and replanted them - no problem.

  • All done, moved the others and looking good. Thanks both for your help

Make sure you keep them really well watered now,and they should be ok

Let's face it,a decent size Daphne is blooming expensive
  • Yeah I didn’t want to lose it, will be watered daily
  • Our Daphne was looking poorly and so tried to replant it in another area of the garden.
Lost it but we thought this would happen.
It had been in the garden for many years and was a great fragrant plant.

  • I had a large daphn in a big container which was doing really well. Moved house taking daphne with me. Thought I would be kind and took the daphne out of the pot and planted it in the garden. It died.
They can be so unpredictable. I have tried 3 times to replace mine with new ones but they have all died within 4/5 years for no reason. You are so lucky if you have one established and surviving for any length of time.
Treasure and enjoy it, you never know how long you will have it.
