Male flowers only on squash plant

My wife has tried to grow squash for the first time this year, but we have had no fruits develop as the plants have only male flowers. Is this a bad year for squash, or have we done something fundamentally wrong? The plant has been put into our vegetable garden, which was well manured at the back end of last year

There was a thread recently about this - someone else had the same problem. They were concerned that it was the seed, but I think the general consensus was that the weather had been inconsistent, so the female flowers weren't developing - yet.

    Here's that thread  :)

It's been a bad couple of years here.  Most have only produced one or two fruit again and a couple with nothing.  9 plants of 4 different varieties, all of which I've grown before.  I grew a new (for me) compact type called 'butterbush' in a greenhouse border this year, and that one has done better with three which should ripen, and another two which might, so looks down to what are considered 'unusual' weather patterns in the last 2 years.  They need warmth and regular intervals of sun and rain, but have had long periods of sun with no rain, or rain with no sun in these last 2 years, at least here.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
