Where to buy hedging?

CraighBCraighB Posts: 758
Hi guys,

I would like to buy some hedging plants for my front garden and I am going with Yew (preferably bare root). I wondered if anyone could suggest some good places to buy it from online?

Are hedgesdirect.co.uk any good?

Thanks
Craigh

I ordered from Grasslands (bare root box) a couple of years ago, after much research they seemed the best value and I was really pleased with the plants.

(They won't be showing bare root stock on their website for a month or two yet)

Hopes Grove is an excellent supplier.  :)

That's brilliant thanks for the suggestions! Will definately use one of those two as the prices are good and I'd rather go with a company that people have had good experiences with!

How did you plant yours? Did you add any manure to the planting hole or not? I'm sure I've seen Monty on the TV saying don't add anything to the planting hole so that the roots go in search of nutrients etc?

Also does anyone have suggestions about how many to plant per meter?
I will be buying bare root yew hedging at about 30/40cm tall. The websites suggest 3 to 5 per meter but didn't know if 5 would be a bit overkill?

    Thanks

I've never used yew @CraighB, but  it's usually best to opt for the site guidelines as you may get some which don't take.
I've always dug over and prepped the area well, mainly because I've had usually had to plant next to a pavement, and therefore have to cope with footings of kerbs, or next to mature trees so the ground is always quite difficult. Keep grass well away with a proper edging [if you're planting beside a lawn] to avoid competition.
I always used well rotted manure and compost mixed together. Then plant and let them get on with it. I usually add a light sprinkle of B,F&Bone and that's it.
I've never really needed to water after the initial watering, because our autumn and winter weather is always wet enough. In a drier area, watering is the most important thing to get plants established initially. Buying smaller bare roots is also far better. They establish more readily.  :)

Never used them because any time I went to order, what I wanted wasn't in stock!

hedgesdirect are good.  Good plants at reasonable prices.
