In that case, @hannwise, you need to find a new home for your salix and get a plant that will be happy with restricted roots. There is a basic gardening mantra - Right plant, right place - which works for pots as well as soil/aspect/climate.
That's a great timber planter @Fairygirl. No doubt my wee brain will have a good whirr about that for somewhere here. Not that I'm short of soil and space but I want something smart for the edge of the terrace..........

I've done all the raised beds like that @Obelixx. A timber 'coping' on them just means they look more decorative rather than functional. All plastic lined, including the posts. Just made life a lot easier, rather than trying to improve the soil everywhere on the rubbish ground. It would have taken a long time to get beds that were much use. Gave me something to do as well

I remember you saying you started with crap soil @Fairygirl and we have that too out the back plus it's not level so a construction like that would solve many problems. Wouldn't have to be as deep as I only want to grow herbs in it and maybe a bit of lavender but I do like your grey and the top just finishes it so well. Clever girl.

Yes - just compacted clay and hardcore etc with slabs and gravel, apart from one bed along the boundary which had been compacted grass. That was dealt with by loads of manure after stripping off the turf. The beds all vary in size and height to work with the boundary. The plot isn't a uniform shape, so I wanted a basic rectangle in the middle. It also means I can grow plants with different needs in the same bed by using another barrier front to back at various points, and it gives height right away. It suits me well. It's not a big garden, but I was working too, and running a household, so there wasn't masses of time to spend on it

If it was mine I’d prune it so it gets bushier. I have these and it’s never mattered if I over prune it, I have it in the ground and 2 little ones in pots.
@hannwise I just trim back to a more bushy shape when it gets too long maybe in the summer but the main prune is in the autumn before it starts to die off and lose its leaves. It’s just easier for me so the leaves don’t drop everywhere making a mess but I prune into a nice ball shape then and see how it looks in the spring.
The two little ones are probably in 2-5ltre plastic pots with trays under? I just water well.

What kind of time of year do you prune? And what size pots do you have your little ones in?
