Unhappy alternanthera dentata firebug

I'm hoping someone may know what's wrong with my alternanthera dentata firebug and how to revive it. It started losing it's leaves about 2 months ago, and now basically has none. I thought maybe it just lost it's leaves in winter (I'm in Australia) but I've noticed even the new little leaves are falling off, so I googled and google says they should have leaves all year round. I can't see any bugs or worms or any visible reason for it.

When I cut the stems down they are still pink inside, so it's not completely dead and I'm hoping I can revive it. I've ordered a bigger pot and new potting mix and will replant it when they arrive. First pic is how it was mid June and the last 2 pix are now. Please help. I love this plant.
