Trees for container ?

Hello,

Can anyone help me like to understand what are the best trees or fast growing tall shrubs for a container in a south facing garden?

Bamboo isn’t an option, so I’m struggling. I need something that will get to 10-12ft tall ASAP.

Can anyone recommend something suitable please?

Many thanks!

I'm afraid we get queries like this all the time. Anything that  grows very fast, won't just stop, so you'll have to be prepared to prune regularly.  :)
In pots, shrubs/trees need a lot of care, especially if it's a south facing site. They dry out very rapidly.
The container will have to be huge.  :)

Some of the hedging plants might suit. Take a look at some of the online suppliers for ideas

Salix exigua might be worth consideration. It's not evergreen but around thre right sort of height, and vigorous. You will probably have to rig some kind of irrigation system whatever you plant.

In the August RHS magazine,  there is an article about a roof garden.  They used  Crataegus persimillis Prunifolia. It has a height and spread of 13ft in 20 years. Obviously on a roof terrace it will be in a planter and relatively exposed so should be able to cope in your situation.

There are certainly shrubs/trees which will suit, but @M.potter needs to offer a bit more info re the site and the area that needs screening etc.  :)

  • Thank you for the comments so far, I’m really struggling with the right plant here.

It’s to screen some windows from the house behind. The garden is sheltered  and doesn’t get very windy, but in full sun. The garden is all paved so it’ll be in a container that needs to sit on top of the slabs.

Ideally something tall and thin(ish) would be ideal, but like I say, bamboo isn’t an option I’m afraid.

    Does this help more?

Photo of the space would help  :)
The usual solution is something further into the plot, ie nearer your house. It then doesn't need to be so big because of the perspective.
