flowering shrub for well used area

I am looking for a medium height shrub for an area well used by my teenager. Must be able to take an occasional beating from his basketball😬

Potentilla will cope with all sorts of abuse, and will grow virtually anywhere.Ā
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    PotentillaĀ  ;)
Thorny shrubs will work, but it may not suit being beside the patio. Spirea are pretty tough too - not very fussy as to site and aspect either. The white spring ones are nicer than the pink ones, but I'm biased. I hate wishy washy pinkĀ  :)

Talking of wishy washy pink, Rosa 'The Fairy' would probably fare ok, it's a tough and compact bushy rose. I really like it. But Potentilla is a good idea.Ā
