Long shoots on seed potatoes

I bought some seed potatoes today but they have very long shoots. The garden centre didn't have any alternatives. What is they best way to plant them in pots for Christmas, please?

  • The shoots are probably extended due to the conditions they have been kept in at the Garden Centre - ie lack of light.
Plant them as you would normally do and just keep earthing up - the shoots should green up once they have light available to them.
@Dovefromabove knows about potatoes so could probably advise you further.

🤔 afraid this query is outside my experience or my brother’s (large potato farmer). I’ve never grown potatoes for Christmas and Bro keeps his seed potatoes in climate- controlled conditions so wouldn’t have the long shoot problems.

However what @philippasmith2 says makes sense, along with the fact they’ve probably been stored at too high a temperature.

Plant as Philippa suggests and try not to snap the shoots.

    😊

At this rate climate change will mean there's bees making hunny up there 😋🍯

  • Thanks Phillipa, When I asked the staff at the garden centre they blamed the suppliers! I needed to get them as I wanted to give some to my daughter who is visiting us tomorrow otherwise I would have looked elsewhere. I don't feel too bad now that I know what we can do. Cheers Lynda
  • Always blame someone else   ;)
Hope you and daughter get a decent crop anyway.
  • Thank you Phillipa, most kind.
