Whatever you choose, I think it should be one plant and it will need to be watered frequently.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Yes, I understand that idea - Ive seen it done plenty of times, but it’s not for me for the reasons in my previous posts.

Spring bulbs and a single variety of a good perennial would give a long succession of flowering.
I'd have a clematis there if it was mine.  :)
I had pots filled with muscari this spring, it was really nice.

I might give clematis a chance for next spring, I’ve got a spare Montana lying around, but I’ll need to add a trellis or something for it to climb.

I wouldn't use a montana, but there are loads of smaller clematis which would be more than happy in there.
I think you just need to decide what you like or don't like, and start from there.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I know it’s not massively different, but I think adding the cotoneaster was a good idea. I’ve put them in with and behind the rudbeckia.

    L Before R After

    Sunshine helps :)

Also tried with more rudbeckia in front, which I think hints to “what I am after”. These ones are too tall, pots too big, so I’ll shop for some smaller varieties:
