  • I have a load of green tomatoes myself, hoping this warm spell this week will do the job for my 8 tomato plants, must have 3-400 tomatoes not that far away from being ready, fortunately i have also harvested a load that i have been able to freeze

Whatever you do DONT stop watering them. Tomatoes are basically water if they don't have access to water they cant swell and grow.

  • OK, Ive just go in from my mass exfoliation exercise:

As you can see, the compost bin has had a good feeding today! Do you think I should take anymore foliage off?

Ill move the pot plants inside. Hopefully a couple of good weeks of sun will develop these.

Ill see if I can ripen these in a bag with a banana, but I think theyre too green!

(apologies for images being sideways. Since updating to Windows 10 a lot of my photos seem to do that!)

It's a problem with the site re the photos - it's becoming a real PITA. I'm losing the will to live with it, and fed up turning them to see what the pix on some queries are. It's that or an even more painful neck than I already have!
Forget the bananas - it's not necessary  :)
I think your foliage is fine now. The only other thing I'd mention is the terracotta pots. They absorb a lot of water, so it could be worth making sure that the toms are getting the water you put in.  :)
Just bring your toms in at night. I have one that was from sideshoots, so a bit smaller, and I put it out during the day [as long as it's warm enough, which is sometimes debateable ] and bring it in at night.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Ah - is it this website that rotates the photos!? It forces photos Ive taken in portrait to be landscape.

Bananas are unnecessary? I thought they let off some gas that promoted ripening.

Good point about the terracotta post absorbing water that would otherwise go to the toms. Which leads onto a question Ive been ruminating on: are plastic pots better? I know terracotta look nicer, but theyre heavier, dont keep moisture, and leave stains on some surface. With plastic pots you have none of those issues. (I know Im deviating from my own post!)

I've never done the banana thing. [I'd rather eat them - when they're green.... ;)]
The toms will ripen perfectly well without them.  :)
No method is 100% foolproof though, so don't worry about it too much.

If you crop the photos a bit more it helps apparently. I automatically chop all my photos for this site anyway- to less than 1MB , as the photo uploading has always been dodgy.

I always use plastic pots, but mine are inside so I don't see them. I can understand if they're prominent, you wouldn't want to see them though. It's just worth bearing in mind that it can have an effect, especially in dry spells  :)

I think those in the pic you have taken off are too green to ripen off the plant.
You just need them to start turning colour and then they will ripen indoors ( warm room/Airing Cupboard or WHY).
Stick them in the freezer until you decide what you can use them for (unless you are into making Chutney or Green Tom sauce now ) :)

At the end of the season, I would say now is too early to panic.you can put tomatoes away in a dark drawer to ripen. I'm surprised Devon is cold for them,I always thought that was the mildest area in the UK. I have had punnets and punnets full. I normally sow in January along with the peppers, kitchen window sill (north facing) then they go into the conservatory, till they're big enough for the free house. Then half go outside in the veg plot,3 in pots by the green house. The ones in pots are doing better, they're in plastic pots

Green house, not free house,is the phone trying to get me drinking!!
  • My toms seem to be quite green, and a few slightly discoloured leaves.

I’m still getting small ones growing though I have pinched out the tips at 5 levels of flowers.

Generally they seem to be doing OK.

    Any thoughts?
