Eucomis

BraidmanBraidman Posts: 274
Hello,
Has anyone grow or grown in the past Eucomis as I purchased three bulbs of Sparkling Brandy and three mixed in the Spring and planted them in pots!

Although they have all sprouted they are only about six inches high and making no effort to get any taller.

I read somewhere that it took two seasons for them to flower, is this so?

Any info or experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers

I've not grown Sparkling Brandy, but grow others.
They're pretty greedy and need a lot of feeding

I assume you mean Sparkling Burgundy. Need well drained soil, a sunny position, and feed and water well. Even then it is hit and miss. Mine flowered really well two years ago, not at all last year, one flower coming up this year out of five.  The leaves are a good colour though.

Those bulbs which I planted this year in a pot flowered almost a month ago and is still in flower. But those which were planted last year have vanished without a trace.

They'll take a while to be at full growth. They also aren't hardy.  :)

Sparkling Burgundy is lovely though, if that's what you have.

Just a thought - if they were smaller bulbs, they'll take another season to bulk up too. Large, mature bulbs would be quicker, as with many bulbs.  :)

    .
Yup! Burgundy, as usual did not properly proof read!

And yes they were not the largest bulbs sent, but they will be well taken care of over winter as my father-in-law has taken them under his wing and will keep them in his greenhouse which is larger than mine and not so much stuff crammed in!

Will see how they perform next season if they survive.

Thanks for the chit-chat and advice, much appreciated!

    "Not so much crammed in"
    That sounds familiar  ;)
Good luck with them @Braidman. They're unusual, but very striking plants when they're growing well.  :)

I know they are supposed to be tender, but we have self seeded, flowering now Eucomis comosa. Seed can only have been in 2 years ago too.

I bought some bulbs a couple of years back, they didn't look much at the time but were just 50p. They grew good leaves last year and this year they have flowered well. They look great but smell like marmite or something and you can smell them from a few feet away, the flies love them 😆
