Newbie Question - Salix Flamingo

quarkradquarkrad Posts: 23
I recently bought a Salix Integra Flamingo - it had a small shoot coming out of the main stem/trunk.  I cut off the small shoot and potted it - now it has grown to about 6".  What with this being late August I'm not sure what to do with this growing plant and what it will develop into.  Should I leave it in the pot over the winter (bring inside or leave outside)?  At what point do I plant it outside and will it be a ground plant or grow into something like the original buy (small tree)?  Any advice most appreciated.

It looks plain green to me. If there is no variegation and the cutting came from the trunk,  then it is likely to be some other kind of willow, used as the stock onto which the flamingo is grafted. It will almost certainly grow with great vigour and form a large tree very quickly. Leave it outside and see what happens, but whatever you do, don't plant it in the ground if you have a small garden!

Salix flamingo is grafted onto the straight stem … the cutting you have is probably something like this https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/a-z-of-british-trees/white-willow/
the one in the photo has been pollarded to control its size …. un-pollarded they grow much bigger.

Your Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki' ...common name Flamingo Willow is a variegated tree,  grafted onto another common plain green leafed Salix...common name willow.

The plant you have in the pot will very quickly grow into a HUGE willow of some sort.
I suggest you do not plant it in your garden.
    Unless you have a field.
