Terraruims

Hello all.

I was just wondering, after searching all over on here, and there's not much on this subject, if anyone would be interested in kinda opening up a terrarium thread.
I've been making them for many years now and it's a nice hobby.

If anyone has any thoughts or would like to chat about this it would be lovely to hear from you all.

I wish you all well and hope to chat soon.

All my best to you all.

Thanks for starting the thread! I'm growing some of my succulents in a fish bowl repurposed as a terrarium, sitting on a southwest-facing windowsill. I know the terrarium might not be the best place for succulents but they are managing so far. Would like to hear/see others' experience on growing succulents in terrariums.
  • Hey hi msq!

    Sounds great actually.
Succulents, fine! Just need a nice drainage layer that's all.
I've done a bunch of them before and all good.
    Nice to hear from you.

    All my best

I've got a nice green glass one that I had planted up in the past. I've been thinking of starting it up again. I have a couple of windowsills full of cacti and succulents, but I want miniature ferns and other green plants for the bowl and they are not so easy to source. I think it was more on trend when I first did mine and I don't recall having any difficulty finding plants then. Can't remember what they were though, which doesn't help!
  • I made a real funky bonsai based one a few yrs back buttercup.
I donated it to an old folks home but I'm sure it's still thriving, I'll swing by there next week and take some pics, see if I can put them up on here maybe.
Had small ferns in and the like.
Looked pretty cool from memory, had a great moss carpet too.
I made some small stainless root cages to keep the ferns stunted.

    Nice.

I planted one up (my 2nd) yesterday - an old small goldfish tank - bought a few extra plants online (just googled terrarium plants) :-)    Had stock of activated charcoal, houseplant compost, gravel, moss etc from doing my first one several weeks ago.  Fittonia, arrowhead fern, Cryptanthus etc.  I've watched several Youtube videos and follow a terrarium enthusiast on Instagram for inspiration ..

There's also an article in Sept issue of GW mag ...
  • I did one as a lockdown project and it’s lasted so far….didn’t do much more than stick plants in and hope for the best tho!

My succulents fish bowl as mentioned in my previous post. Have to say that i feel a bit nervous/lazy about crowding the succulents, so always leave plenty of room for them to grow. Downside is that they look no where near as pretty as those succulent arrangements you see online... If someone's got good tips on growing easy-maintenance beautiful succulents mix, would be great to hear!  :p

Years ago my ex and I had a little business making, planting and selling them. (Under the corny name of Glass Distinction)  He made them I planted them up. we had a lovely nursery where we could get small pots of plants, Ferns and other moisture loving plants.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    That's absolutely beautiful that one.
    Really really nice indeed!

I made a few to kinda sell a few years back, I recall putting them on a well known Internet based auction site ha ha.
Not a sausage! Nobody seemed remotely interested, I never even had any bids or watchers.

It was most bizarre, I tried a few different categories but nothing.

    All my best.
